12 year old Kafayat Kareem was b@ttered by h-er father who used barb wire to beat h-er mercilessly for defending h-er mother during one of h-er parent’s f1ght at their home in Orile Iganmu, Lagos. Kafayat’s father pounced on h1s w1fe after he discovered sh-e used h1s money to play lottto. Kafayat, who is a Junior Secondary School 1 student at Canal Secondary School, Orile, Lagos, said if not for the timely intervention of vigilante people who found he-r writhing in pa1n inside the market, sh-e would have died.
“I live with my parents at 4 Kuforiji Street, Orile. On July 7th, I ran away from home after receiving severe beating from my f4ther. My offence was that I tried to stop h1m from beating my m0ther. My f4ther accused my m0ther of using h1s hard earned money to play lotto game and h-e descended on h-er with anything h-e could lay h1s hands on. My f4ther alleged that my m0ther l0ves patronizing lotto game and h.e beat her up mercilessly and broke h.er knees. Despite my m0ther’s cry for help, none of our neighbours came to h.er rescue because they are afraid of my f4ther.
I could not bear the beating anymore and I begged my f4ther to stop beating my m0ther. H.e became furious and pounced on me.
This is not the first time my f4ther will beat my m0ther and I. I have lost count of h1s endless beatings. On one occasion, I begged my m0ther to relocate four of us h-er children to Ilorin so we can stay away from our f4ther due to h1s constant beating. I am the first child but my mo0her said my fa-ther will change but h-e has gotten worse by the day. My mo-ther is presently on admission at the Charity Hospital at Orile following the beating my fa-ther gave h-er.
I could not stand hi-s beating anymore and I ran away from home to meet one of my mot-her’s frie-nds at Oyingbo market but I did not meet h-er when I got to the market. I was in great pa-ins and I decided to sleep in the market because I do not want to go back to my fat-her’s house. It was while I was sleeping at the market that some vigilante m-en came and rescued me. I told them my plight and they took me to the hospital where I am presently receiving treatment”
Also speaking, the secretary of the Vigilante group of Nigeria at Ebutte Metta where Kafayat was found, said after seeing the g-irl in so much pai-n, he mobilzed for h-er to be taken to a nearby hospital to receive medical attention
“On July 7th about 4am, I received a report from our members patrolling the Oyingbo market along the railway line that they found a g-irl laying in pains in one of the stalls. I told them to bring h-er to our office and when I saw h-er bo-dy, I asked h-er what happened and sh-e told me that h-er fa-ther beat he-r with barb wire. I quickly mobilized and took h-er to the Star Clinic at Ebute- Metta where sh-e is receiving treatment the wound on h-er b-ody had become sores and I wonder what type of a fa-ther will beat a child like that. I took h-er to the Iponri police station to report the ba-ttering but the policemen there turned me back that they do not handle such a case. I took h-er to the Area C police Command at Surulere and the police there refused to attend to us. They told me to take h-er to the office of the Public defender. I have been running around with this gi-rl since morning to get the necessary authority to look into this matter and arrest the f-ather but they have refused to take the case,” the m-an said.
